NATURAL HABITATS AND TRAILS
                 NATURAL HABITATS

The Sanctuary includes the following natural habitats:


Cattail Marsh

- tall dense cattails create the border to open water
covered in places by water lilies, iris and smaller plants

- the cattails help to filter and clean the water



Tamarack Bog

- Tamarack trees, which turn gold and loose their
needles in the fall, grow here in sphagnum moss

- the water in this area is acidic and supports very
special bog plants




Beaver Meadow

- the beaver have created this flooded meadow of
cattails and rushed

- watch for beaver trails, dams and lodges




Upland Mixed Forest

- a rich diverse forest with conifers such as pine and
spruce along with deciduous trees like maple and
ash




Lowland Transition Forest

- here the forest condition ins returning after being
disturbed by changes like mine and town sites

- most common trees are poplar and birch

                   DISCOVER THE TRAILS


Beaver Meadow Trail

(3.1 Km. RED trail markers)

This trail goes through flat territory, with one very short,
steep section.  You will pass through a transition forest.
There is a side trail to a beaver pond.  You will also be
able to use a viewing stand overlooking a large pond.




Tamarack Bog Trail

(5.2 Km. BLUE trail markers)

You will travel through flat land with one rocky section
along Horne Lake.  After following the gravel causeway
(along the cattail marsh), passing the viewing stand
and crossing the two bridges, you will pick up this trail.
It follows the Tamarack Bog, Horne Lake and joins the
Upland Forest trail.




Upland Forest Trail

(2.7 Km. YELLOW trail markers)

This trail has some gently sloping sections.  Follow the
gravel causeway (along the cattail marsh), pass the
viewing stand and the two bridges and look for the
YELLOW markers that will guide you to the Upland
Forest.




Please take nothing but photographs
and leave nothng but footprints!
