ABOUT
THE ELLIOT LAKE INSTITUTE
FOR
LEARNING IN RETIREMENT
The Elliot
Lake Institute for Learning is a subsidiary of Elliot Lake
Lifelong Learning, a non-profit corporation, facilitating the
development of learning initiatives in Elliot Lake.
**************
The founders of
the Elliot Lake Institute for Learning in
Retirement recognized that the desire to learn to discover
and then to pass on knowledge, is a defining human
characteristic. As retirees, they sought to meet their
need for lifelong learning in a senior centred environment.
That Spirit of the Institute is embodied in a "minimax"
organization: minimum structure and formality combined
with maximum flexibility and participation. A fully voluntary organization, our Institute pays its own way through its
membership and program fee structure. None of our
people are paid and our Coordinators and Directors give
of their time freely. They endeavour to present learning
opportunities to participants and help them through the
process, but at the same time letting them set their own
pace and targets. Peer support and exchange of ideas and
opinions enliven the classroom activities.
In that spirit, we are an Institute of Learning: an institute
dedicated to the acquisition of new information, knowledge
and ideas that can change the way one understands, acts
or views the world, while at the same time, valuing and
preserving the lessons of the past.
The Institute is a member of CATALIST, a Canada-wide
conference of similar learning institutions with whom we
share our individual successes, problems and solutions.
You are invited to be a part of our organization that has
gained recognition and respect across the country. You
probably have your own gifts to share. We hope that you
will.
A Final Word.
The ILR depends entirely on volunteers to direct our
operations and coordinate our programs. We need your ideas and your help
to develop new programs of interest to our members. If you have an interest in
any subject that might be of interest to our members, contact anyone on the
Board of Directors and we will try and arrange a program for next semester.
