Elliot
Lake - the "Jewel in the Wilderness"
Elliot Lake is called the "Jewel in the Wilderness" and I
hope this site will show you why. It is situated in the North
Channel area (or North Shore area of Lake Huron) and is
just that, a city surrounded by wilderness. This gives
residents and visitors alike,an opportunity to escape "city
life" by just venturing out their back door! This area enjoys
the beauty and diversity of all four seasons, with many
indoor and outdoor activities.
With the clean air, more than 4,000 sparkling, crystal
lakes and rivers, beautiful forests, unbelievably breath-
taking landscapes and scenery, and abdundant wildlife,
it truly is a paradise!
The Trans-Canada (Highway 17) cuts through the area,
providing access to all communities as well as the area's
wilderness adventure areas.
Located only two hours from Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan,
or five hours from Toronto, Ontario, the area is a wonderful
vacation area to Ontario, Michigan, Ohio and Indiana. The
area is also easily reached from both Southern Ontario, and
Quebec.
The North Channel stretches from Manitoulin Island (which
has seven hiking trails that provide spectacular views of the
island, Lake Huron and the North Channel) to Sault Ste.
Marie. This pristine playground provides year round
recreation and activities.
The Elliot Lake/North Shore Area:
Elliot Lake and the North Shore region is located north
of Lake Huron, halfway between Sudbury and Sault Ste.
Marie, Ontario.
Located in the district of Algoma, the North Shore Region
consists of:
The City of Elliot Lake (located
on Highway 108 about 20 minutes
off
Highway 17, the Trans-Canada Hwy)
and the other 4 municipalities located along Highway
17:
The Town of Blind River,
The Township of Shedden,
The Serpent River First Nation,
The Township of the North Shore.
Vacation Playground:
Elliot Lake and the North Shore region is nestled
among the
hills of the PreCambrian Shield, which accounts for the rocky
heavily-forested landscape. There are two major rivers: the
Mississaugi River to the west, and the Spanish River to the
east, flowing southward to Lake Huron. There are more than
4,000 lakes and waterways in the vast area between these
rivers, among some of the most dramatic and unspoiled
natural landscapes in the north.
This area has just about everything any boater or fisherman
could dream of. There are 3 municipal boat launches on
the
lakes in and around town and numerous man-made and
natural launches provide access to other inland waterways.
The North Channel (a slim corridor of Upper Lake Huron) is
one of the best cruising grounds in North America and the
best freshwater sailing area in the world.
For the fishermen, this area offers some of the best
fishing in North America. About 250 of the lakes are lake
trout lakes, with the rest being pickerel, pike, bass,
speckled trout and rainbow trout.
Other popular summer activities include canoeing, hiking,
camping and swimming. Whatever your pleasure, you never
have to go far to find them: beaches, golf, tennis, slo-pitch,
and curling.
However, summer is not the only time to enjoy great
recreational activities. In winter months, this area becomes
a winter wonderland where you can enjoy skating, cross-
country skiing, ice fishing, downhill skiing, curling, hockey,
and snowmobiling.
This area has some of Ontario's most extensive and
scenic trails, with snowmobilers able to pass through flat,
as well as hilly trails, open territory, and thick forests. The
trails have been widened and improved over the past
few years in a massive trail building program by the
regional snowmobile clubs, so there are hundreds of
kilometres of groomed snowmobile trails. Elliot Lake's Ski
Hill has one of the longest vertical drops in the area,
second only to Searchmont Resort in Sault Ste. Marie.
Attractions:
Although one is surrounded by nature's beauty in Elliot Lake,
including two beautiful crystal-clear beaches right in town,
there are some "must see" for residents and visitors alike.
Enjoy breathtaking views from the Fire Tower Lookout, visit
the newly-opened nature sanctuary, or drive the scenic route,
called the Deer Trail, that leads to the beautiful and
spectacular Mississagi Provincial Park.
The City
Aside from the beautiful environment, Elliot Lake offers
all the amenities anyone could want. Elliot Lake is a
modern, fully serviced community. It has a population of
about 14,000, and our roads, shops, restaurants and
infrastructure is comparable to that of any modern city.
Elliot Lake has a first-class hospital with helipad, police &
fire protection, local transit service, excellent schools, a
municipally owned and operated airport, and a wide array
of recreational, social and leisure facilities and programs.
Elliot Lake has it all in a safe, clean, affordable and
friendly rural setting.
